I just watched a clip of Armageddon to see just how funny Gervais is. Having raised a disabled kid I can tell you it matters that you don’t refer to them as “handicapped” or worse like Americans often do “retard”. First of all both words have the same effect as an insult because we are supposed to have progressed in our understanding of disability so these words hurt now. It’s also because it’s reflective of the fact that ignorance is alive and well in the people who use them but in Gervais case it’s just used as (shitty) material.
