I would argue that nearly everybody is portrayed better in death than they are in life, in part because everyone's a bit uncomfortable speaking ill of the dead. I can't help but think of Christopher Hitchens' very enjoyable half-hour special on the death of Princess Diana and the bizarre reaction to it.
Of course, the current situation is in many ways a good deal worse, if only because unlike with Diana, we're seeing people get fired, sometimes simply for re-posting stuff Kirk said himself. Obviously, Kirk's fans are worried it makes them look bad and hurts the narrative of the saintly moderate.
For what it's worth, I question Kirk's popularity outside of his base in the States. Well, for one thing, I only found out about Kirk via Nick Fuentes, and I never watched any of his content. In fact, the most education I've gotten on Charlie Kirk before his death was the South Park parody; my coworker only knows him from that, and my dad only learned about him from the news.
But in all fairness, because I really have no tolerance for his particular style or views, perhaps someone can tell me I'm completely wrong. I assumed he was part of the Christian far-right, a faction I'm a little less interested in than other far-right personalities, in part because their endless fallback to Bible verses really does nothing for me. I don't feel I can apply logic to what I ultimately see as superstition.
Another aspect of the whole response has obviously been the insane double standards. Do you think Konstantin Kisin is going to apologise, given that England's only mass shooter in well over a decade was one of his fans? No, I think probably no one has even brought that up to him. Whenever someone kills or tries to kill a bunch of people in the UK, I usually try to search for and save as much of their social media as I can because it's often fairly predictable what they were listening to or watching and Musk is a common recurrence.
I don't know how long the Kirk obsession will last, but hopefully, something comes along to take Musk's mind off it.
Maybe Deus Ex 5 will be announced and it will star a black woman, something Musk can dedicate most of his free time to complaining about.
